Our story

Simon Boyle is the creative force behind Brigade and Beyond Food Community Interest Company.

Since starting his career at the age of 16, working as an apprentice chef at The Savoy, Simon has gone on to lead a highly respectable career, working for Saudi Princes, taking Head Chef roles on 5* Cruise Ships as well as becoming the first ever Culinary Ambassador for the global giant Unilever and running his own Private Catering and Events business.

It was in 2004 however, when Simon returned from Sri Lanka where he volunteered as part of the post Tsunami relief team, that Simon found his passion and commitment to help and support those less fortunate than himself.

Since 2004, Simon has worked tirelessly to help homeless people across London to rebuild their lives. Using food as a catalyst, Simon has set about imparting his passion, skills and knowledge of cooking and food on to Beyond Food Foundation's apprentices, encouraging them to move their lives forward in a positive and meaningful way.

Following 6 years of relentless hard work, Simon was able to take his vision on to the next level. Forging relationships with Pricewaterhouse Coopers and the Homes and Communities Agency, Simon secured a grant of £800k to invest into a restaurant that would change the lives of hundreds of homeless people across London. 

Brigade was born out of Simon’s realisation that there are not enough inspirational projects aimed at supporting homeless people to end the cycle of ‘no job no home – no home no job’. To achieve this Beyond Food run a series of programmes designed to motivate participants towards sustainable employment.

Freshlife is a 6-week series of motivational workshops that promotes well-being, passion for food and meaningful employment.

United Kitchen Apprenticeship is a fully certified training programme where apprentices study towards a Level 2 Diploma in Professional Cookery as well as receiving on the job training in the kitchens at Brigade. In addition to this, apprentices also recieve personal mentoring and employability coaching helping to create a direct pathway to future employment.
